We love to lecture our teenagers about screen time, we monitor their device activity like we are the CIA. We roll our eyes as they Snapchat their friends from across the room, issue stern warnings about "too much time on Roblox," and give passionate TED Talks at the dinner table about "the dangers of social media addiction."
Exactly Josephine… as the world spins off its axis, community and connection keeps us grounded (and therapy is expensive!) Not stopping any time soon either ☺️
Also, to add a positive spin, if I am honest, I need it for my mental health right now. The fact that I can connect with someone I don't know IRL like you who has similar views about the carnage of the world really HELPS me and pulls me from the edge of despair. And cheaper than a therapist. So again, not stopping any time soon.
I'm not seeing a lot of people posting their stats. My screen time averages 3 hours per day but is clearly longer on weekends, although it looks like that's primarily the NYT cooking app. I also discovered that at some point, I put a screen time limit on myself for games and social media, but clearly it wasn't needed because I don't think I have ever tripped it (1.5 hours) unlike my son who complains about that limit regularly... The 62 "pickups" per day has really caught my eye. I'm not ready for the "brick" but it does feel like there is an opportunity through turning off notifications to bring that number down...
Love your commentaries. Fortunately, very few of those of us who are in our 80s don’t suffer from tech addictions. I check things once per day and that’s enough😊
I need to be more like you!! Unfortunately Mum had a terrible tech addiction and went down wild Royal Family Conspiracy rabbit holes! Looking at her search history after she passed should be a whole separate post! 🤣
I just bought https://getbrick.app/ if you do decide you want a break! Find it gives me a true mental break - even with all notifications off and screen time limits on and a black and white screen so the colors don’t tantalize my brain and all the psychological warfare against myself to de-addict, my mind will wander to wanting to refresh email, slack, etc. Something about Bricking my device totally quiets my mind!
Not an app it's a magnet on your fridge that locks you out of your phone until you physically touch it back to the rfid to unlock it 😂 Maybe try it for the boys lol
This is so me (and actually my husband who reads aloud from the comments section of our neighbourhood app). Brilliant post Josephine!
It was actually fun re-reading it this morning to announce that absolutely nothing has changed and if anything the addiction is so so much worse!! 😂

Yay.. I second that, this phone seems to be surgically attached to my hand (which I think my daughter has noticed) 🤣

I love voice-over dog videos! Send 'em to me!!

I don't know what you're talking about... 🙄...
Just wanted to comment on how wonderful you are! Ping!
🤣😭🤣
I love this post, Jo. And I love your honesty. 💙
And here I am on a Sunday morning, refreshing with glee with every new comment. 😂
But I’m having fun with the silly reels we send each other 😂
It’s always the favorite part of my day and I consider it essential for my mental health!

I have heard that is a great app but I am not ready for it yet. But yes, think how much more effective I would be!

Big Jim Acosta fan? 🤣 Love it. So funny, Jo!
I wasn’t but I am telling you, I have gone down some strange rabbit holes. I have a bit of a problem 🤷♀️
